A fantastic round of 68, which included 5 birdies, saw Sam Wright equal the course record and win the Men’s Club Championship by one shot from Dave Britten. The first round on Day 1, played in heavy rain and wind which made scoring difficult saw Dave Britten and Colin Clayton lead the field after excellent rounds of 76, with Dave Coleman a further 3 shots back. Thankfully, the heavy rain forecast for Sunday stayed away and Sam took full advantage with some excellent golf to pip Dave to the title by the narrowest of margins.
Sam was playing alongside his Dad Chris, who won the Championship last year and James Hogg. James described Sam’s golf as “the kind of golf I only normally see on television” and Chris, understandably proud, said Sam’s first victory in 2010 was great but to actually play alongside Sam and mark his card during the round was even more special.
Credit should go to Dave Britten who shot 76 both days and was gracious in defeat and praised Sam on a “cracking round of golf”.
It was also great to see Colin Clayton reaping the reward for the hard work he is putting into his golf game with an excellent 76 on Day 1 and although he fell away slightly on Day 2, he still took 3rd place.
The Club Shield was won by Keith Hartley who followed his net 71 on Day 1 with an outstanding display of putting for a net 62.
It was nice to read Sam’s comments on the club’s Facebook Page:-
“There was some good golf played by a lot of people over the weekend. Loved it…a great golf club and brilliant members”.
