As Captain of Southwell Golf for 2012/2013 I would like to welcome all visitors to our website.
We believe that we have a very special and unique club. The front nine, which can be justifiably described as challenging, is enclosed by the grass and all-weather horse race track. A quick look at ‘google earth’ will reveal some attractive water features with the par 3, 7th being our version of the 17th at Sawgrass. If the golf isn’t going too well then bird lovers can enjoy the wildlife including our adopted pair of swans producing a large brood of cygnets each year! The back nine starts back at the club house and winds its way through well established woodland. The main feature is probably the River Greet which features in the layout of 3 of the holes. At the right time of the year the cherry blossom trees produce a wonderful display which of course is followed by a wonderful crop of cherries, enjoyed voraciously by members and guests!
The quality of the course is backed up by the friendly welcome that all will receive at the club. This is endorsed by all those who visit Southwell for the first time and by those who continue to return. For those who wish to combine the golf with a meal they can be assured of excellent food produced by Bernie Forbes, the catering manager. His meat roasts are just one of the many reasons why visiting teams thoroughly enjoy the return fixture. Chris White is the club professional and is on hand to offer advice and lessons and help visitors organise society days etc. He also runs a well stocked golf shop. There is even a motel on site, which is part of the racecourse but some societies have used the facilities to make an enjoyable two or three day break.
We have a number of Open Competitions, details of which can be found in the ‘Open Competitions’ section of the website. For those who may be considering joining the club we can guarantee you a wide variety of well organised competitions equal to any in the area. Again a look at the website will confirm that we cater for all golfing needs.
My fellow captains, Lady Captain Caroline Eccles, Senior Captain Dave Archer and Junior Captain Henry Grant all hope for an enjoyable and exciting year and are looking forward to welcoming members and guests alike.
